Helicopter Maintenance in Kenya

Wilson Airport in Nairobi carries most of Kenya's rotorcraft maintenance load, and which hangar you use matters more than which part of the airfield you park on. Three KCAA-approved organisations work out of Wilson, and a fourth, Tropic Air, has run its own AMO at Nanyuki for sixteen years.
This page covers what a 5Y- registered helicopter can get done at home, what still travels, and VAT rules that have changed twice in the last five years.
The KCAA-approved names at Wilson and Nanyuki
Phoenix Aviation, Avionicare EA and AviorTech Services all hold KCAA maintenance approval at Wilson Airport (WIL/HKNW), Kenya's principal general-aviation, helicopter and safari hub. AviorTech Services operates under AMO certificate K/AMO/L/078; between the three, most line maintenance and scheduled inspection work for Nairobi-based helicopters has a local home.
Away from Nairobi, Tropic Air has held KCAA Approved Maintenance Organisation status at Nanyuki Airport (NYK/HKNL) for sixteen years, covering both fixed-wing and rotary types. Nanyuki is the gateway to Mt Kenya, the Laikipia Plateau and the private conservancies where much of Kenya's safari and utility flying, including a fair share of the Airbus H125 fleet, actually operates day to day.
What Wilson and Nanyuki do not fully replace is component-level depth. Heavier components and specialised parts are frequently sourced through South African suppliers given Kenya's smaller local support base, a gap that shows up fastest when an engine or dynamic component needs work beyond what a local AMO's certificate covers. Scheduled work, overhauls, parts and avionics: the realistic split
Kenya's safari and tourism fleet, plus its smaller police and private segment, mostly needs the same five things done. Here is where each one actually gets done.
| Service | In Kenya | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled inspections | Yes, Wilson or Nanyuki | Phoenix Aviation, Avionicare EA, AviorTech Services (Wilson) and Tropic Air (Nanyuki) cover routine and annual checks |
| Component/engine overhaul | Often abroad | Heavier components typically route through South African suppliers given the smaller local parts base |
| AOG parts sourcing | Partial | Common items held by the Wilson AMOs; specialised parts usually airfreighted from South Africa |
| Avionics work | Limited | Basic support locally; complex glass-cockpit or autopilot faults often go to a South African AMO |
| Management (idle-time revenue) | Yes | Safari and charter operators around Wilson and Nanyuki take on managed aircraft between owner trips |

Get a service quoteImport duty and VAT: a policy that keeps moving
Nominally, aircraft and parts face 0% import duty under the East African Community Common External Tariff. That has not always held: the Finance Act 2020 briefly introduced a helicopter-specific 25% import duty before it was reversed. Standard VAT in Kenya is 16%, but the Finance Act 2023 exempted aircraft and aircraft spares from VAT entirely and scrapped the 3.5% Import Declaration Fee and 2% Railway Development Levy that used to apply on top.
The pattern matters more than any single number: policy has moved back and forth between 2020 and 2023, and AvBuyer's Africa coverage points to this same unpredictability as a reason at least one OEM scaled back its local presence. Reconfirm current guidance with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) before you commit to an import, rather than working from a rate that was correct a year or two ago.

Putting an idle helicopter to work
Kenya's safari operators, Tropic Air and Mombasa Air Safari among them, run scheduled and charter flying to the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and the Laikipia conservancies, and both take on managed aircraft between an owner's own trips. A private Airbus H125 or similar light single sitting idle between family safaris is a realistic candidate for this kind of arrangement, provided its maintenance status matches the operator's own KCAA-approved programme.
As in every market on this page, the paperwork has to line up before the revenue does: an aircraft cannot fly a single paying passenger under someone else's operating certificate until its logbooks and the operator's own approvals agree with each other. Frequently asked questions
Who can legally sign off maintenance on a 5Y- registered helicopter?
Only an engineer working under a KCAA-approved maintenance organisation's certificate can issue a valid release to service. At Wilson Airport that means Phoenix Aviation, Avionicare EA or AviorTech Services (AMO K/AMO/L/078); at Nanyuki it means Tropic Air, which has held KCAA AMO status for sixteen years.
Do I pay VAT on helicopter parts imported into Kenya?
As of the Finance Act 2023, aircraft and aircraft spares are exempt from Kenya's standard 16% VAT, and the old 3.5% Import Declaration Fee and 2% Railway Development Levy on aircraft were scrapped. Policy has changed more than once since 2020, so reconfirm the current position with KRA before you place an order.
Where should I send a Kenyan-registered helicopter for an engine overhaul?
Most heavier component and engine overhaul work travels, usually to a South African AMO, because Kenya's local parts and component-level support base is smaller than Wilson's line-maintenance capability can cover. Budget freight time and customs clearance on both legs of that trip.
Can I charter out my helicopter in Kenya when I am not using it?
Yes, through a licensed operator such as one of the safari or charter companies flying from Wilson or Nanyuki. The aircraft needs a maintenance programme that matches the operator's own KCAA approval before it can fly commercial hours on their certificate.
