Helicopters for Sale in Ghana

Ghana's helicopter market runs on two tracks that rarely mix. Offshore oil and gas support out of Takoradi keeps large contract fleets busy on the Jubilee and TEN fields, while a smaller VIP and business-charter segment links Accra to that same Takoradi corridor. Neither track tells you much about the other.

This page is written for the buyer, not the contract operator: what a private purchase actually looks like, what it costs by tier in 2026, and how the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority registration process runs alongside a wider helicopters for sale in Africa search.

Offshore contracts and VIP charter, Ghana's two markets

Takoradi Airport is the offshore base for the Jubilee and TEN fields. NHV operates Airbus H175s here under contract to Tullow Oil, and PHI Century runs a Sikorsky S-92A base with its own hangar, parts store and maintenance office. Neither of those types trades often on the private pre-owned market, they are specialised contract fleets, but they set the tone for what serious offshore-adjacent flying looks like in Ghana.

Kotoka International Airport in Accra carries the other track: VIP and business-charter work, with West African Helicopters Ltd and charter brokers such as Flapper operating from there, plus onward links to the Takoradi oil and mining corridor. If you are buying rather than chartering, this second track, lighter singles and VIP-capable twins, is where a private purchase realistically sits.

What your budget buys

Four tiers cover the realistic private-buyer market in Ghana, from an entry piston to a genuine medium twin. Ranges are pre-owned, as of 2026.

Helicopter price tiers, Ghana, 2026
TierModelTypical use2026 price range (USD)
Piston entryRobinson R44 Raven IIPrivate flying, training$110,000 - $838,760
VIP/utility singleBell 407GXiAccra to Takoradi VIP and utility work$3,000,000 - $4,300,000
Light twin, offshore optionBell 429Corporate VIP, optional flotation for over-water legs$4,800,000 - $8,000,000
Medium twinLeonardo AW139Genuine offshore-class capability$4,900,000 - $10,500,000

A note on the medium twin tier

AvBuyer identifies the AW139 as the single most-numerous turbine helicopter type in Africa. Ghana's own offshore contracts run H175s and S-92As rather than AW139s, but for a private buyer wanting genuine medium-twin, offshore-adjacent capability it is the most liquid used option on the continent, with parts and pilot experience easiest to find.

Two guides go further: offshore helicopter requirements for West Africa, and our used turbine helicopter checklist if you are stepping up from a piston single.

GCAA registration and import duty

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority administers the civil register under the 9G- prefix, with remotely piloted aircraft using a distinct 9GR- sub-prefix. General import duty applies according to HS code, and Ghana's revised Customs Act made aircraft spare parts duty-free for domestic airlines, but whether that extends to a complete helicopter import depends on its specific HS classification.

Standard VAT applies to imports that are not specifically exempted. Classification and the resulting landed cost should be confirmed with the Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division, or with a licensed customs broker working from your airframe's actual HS code, before you commit to a price.

  • 9G- registration issued by the GCAA
  • Spare parts are duty-free for domestic airlines, a complete helicopter import is assessed on its own HS classification
  • Standard VAT applies unless a specific exemption is confirmed
  • Get a landed-cost calculation from the GRA Customs Division or a licensed broker before you sign

Ghana buyer questions

Can I buy the same helicopters Ghana's offshore operators fly?

Not easily. NHV's Airbus H175s and PHI Century's Sikorsky S-92As at Takoradi are specialised contract fleets that rarely reach the private pre-owned market. A private buyer wanting genuine medium-twin capability typically looks at the Leonardo AW139 instead, which AvBuyer identifies as Africa's most-numerous turbine helicopter type and the most liquid used medium twin on the continent.

What import duty applies to a helicopter brought into Ghana?

General import duty is assessed by HS code. Ghana's revised Customs Act made aircraft spare parts duty-free for domestic airlines, but a complete helicopter import is classified on its own merits, and standard VAT applies unless specifically exempted. Confirm the landed cost for your exact airframe with the Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division or a licensed customs broker before you commit.

Where do VIP and charter helicopters operate from in Ghana?

Kotoka International Airport in Accra is the VIP and business-charter base, home to West African Helicopters Ltd and charter brokers such as Flapper, with routes onward to the Takoradi oil and mining corridor.

Where can a private helicopter be serviced in Ghana?

ATAM Ghana, based at Kotoka, is described as West Africa's first GCAA- and FAA Part 147-certified MRO and aviation-maintenance training academy. Lighter piston and private helicopters are also commonly serviced through South African AMOs given more limited local rotorcraft-specific capacity. See our Ghana maintenance page.
