Few helicopters on the African market span as many generations as the Leonardo AW109. The type has been in production since 1976, through the A, C, E, Power, Grand, GrandNew and current Trekker variants, so two aircraft both called an AW109 can differ by decades of avionics, engine standard and cabin fit.
South Africa gives the type its deepest African roots: the South African Air Force ordered 30 AW109s in 1999, with 25 assembled locally by Denel Aviation from 2003, and the South African Police Service Air Wing still flies the type for VIP transport and law enforcement. That history left a real operating and parts-support base behind it.
Retractable landing gear is the other thing that sets it apart from most light twins in this class, a genuine performance advantage and a genuine extra maintenance item, in the same airframe.
Confirm the variant before you buy
Because the AW109 spans so many generations, the single most important check is not mechanical, it is which aircraft you are actually looking at. Our general used turbine helicopter checklist covers the pre-purchase basics that apply to any type; the points below are specific to the AW109.
- Confirm the exact variant, A, C, E, Power, Grand, GrandNew or Trekker: parts pools and factory support differ significantly between generations.
- Twin Pratt & Whitney PW206/207 engine borescope and trend-monitoring history.
- Retractable landing-gear system function and inspection, a maintenance item this type carries that skid-gear competitors do not.
- Main and tail rotor blade life-limit tracking.
- Avionics-suite currency: older analog panels versus the Honeywell Primus Epic glass cockpit fitted to newer variants.
- Airframe corrosion, particularly on ex-military or ex-police airframes.
- Military-to-civil conversion paperwork if the airframe is ex-government surplus.
Leonardo AW109 price in 2026
The AW109's price range is unusually wide even by helicopter standards: as of 2026 market range, figures run $2,500,000 to $6,900,000, and the reason is almost entirely generation, not condition. A 2016 AW109SP GrandNew averaged around $6,500,000 per Aircraft Bluebook data, and a Trekker listing reached roughly $6,900,000 on Controller.com in 2025. Older A, C and Power-series airframes trade well below both figures.
That means a quoted price is close to meaningless until you know which variant it attaches to. Two aircraft priced a million dollars apart might both be fairly priced, one an early Power-series machine, one a low-time GrandNew, and neither buyer is wrong.
Our honest advice: get the exact variant and year before you compare a single asking price to anything you have seen elsewhere. A broker quoting a bare number without that detail is not giving you enough to judge value.

Ask about Leonardo AW109What it costs to operate
Operating cost runs an estimated $1,800 to $2,500 per flight hour, in line with other light-twin VIP and utility helicopters. No single authoritative per-hour figure exists across all AW109 variants, given how much engine standard and avionics fit vary across the generations still flying.
Older A and C-series airframes typically cost more to keep parts current for, since Leonardo's production and support focus has moved on to the GrandNew and Trekker. A newer variant costs more to buy but is generally simpler to keep supplied.
Retractable gear adds a maintenance line item that skid-equipped light twins do not carry, worth pricing into any ownership budget rather than discovering it at the first scheduled inspection.
Who the AW109 suits in Africa
This is a VIP and executive twin first, with a real secondary life in utility and para-public roles, police, medevac, government, wherever a customer wants twin-engine redundancy in a cabin smaller and cheaper to run than an AW139.
South Africa is the natural home market given the SAAF and SAPS Air Wing history and the parts base that history left behind, though corporate and private buyers elsewhere on the continent look at the type for the same reasons.
If your mission genuinely needs more cabin or offshore certification, step up to the Leonardo AW139. If you want a modern light twin without the AW109's generational complexity, the Bell 429 is worth comparing on price and avionics standard.
