The Sikorsky S-76 built Angola's offshore helicopter industry before the AW139 existed as a competitor. SonAir flew the type, alongside a Super Puma fleet grounded in 2016 over safety concerns, to move crews to platforms off Luanda and Cabinda for years, and Heli Malongo Airways and other Angolan operators kept variants of it working through the same period.

That legacy matters to a buyer today for a specific reason: it means there are more S-76s of more different vintages moving through Africa's pre-owned market than almost any comparable medium twin, spanning four decades of engine and avionics standards under one type name.

It is increasingly a secondary choice for new offshore contracts, which now favour the AW139 and S-92, but that has made it a genuine value option in the pre-owned market rather than a dead type.

Sikorsky S-76 price in 2026

As of 2026 market range, expect $1,000,000 to $7,000,000, and almost all of that spread comes down to variant and engine type rather than condition. A 1997 S-76B has priced near $1,000,000, a 2010 S-76C++ near $5,300,000, and S-76D models have run $5,500,000 to $7,000,000, with one very-low-time 2016 D quoted around $10,000,000 as a clear outlier.

The A and B models run Allison 250-C30 engines, the C+ and C++ run Turbomeca or Safran Arriel engines, and the D runs Pratt & Whitney PW210S engines with a genuinely modern glass cockpit. These are not interchangeable propositions: parts pools, engine overhaul cost and resale value all move with the engine family, not just the airframe age.

Because fewer transactions happen than on an AW139, published ranges move more with each new listing. Treat any number you see as a starting point for a variant-specific conversation, not a fixed price.

What to check before you sign

Given how much the S-76 spans across variants and engine families, confirm the following before you sign anything:

  • Exact variant and engine type, A/B with Allison 250-C30, C+/C++ with Arriel, D with PW210S: parts pools differ substantially.
  • Main and tail gearbox and rotor-hub overhaul status and life-limit tracking.
  • Retractable landing-gear system function and maintenance history.
  • Avionics-suite currency: older analog cockpits versus the glass cockpit fitted to the D model.
  • Corrosion inspection given a typical offshore, salt-water basing history.
  • Airframe total time and cycles against the next major, and costly, heavy inspection.
  • Full maintenance and damage-history records, especially for airframes that flew offshore duty cycles.

Where the S-76 fits in Africa

This suits a buyer who wants medium-twin cabin space and genuine offshore or VIP capability without paying AW139 prices, and who is comfortable doing the variant homework that type requires.

Angola is the type's clearest African home, through SonAir's offshore history and the wider Luanda and Cabinda operating base that grew up around it. A well-documented C++ or D model bought out of that market can still do serious VIP or corporate work today.

If you want a smaller, simpler twin at a lower entry cost, look at the Leonardo AW109. If your mission genuinely needs current offshore-contract certification, the Leonardo AW139 is now the market standard. Photos and component status sheets for specific S-76 airframes, confirmed by variant and engine type, are available on request via WhatsApp.

Operating costs

Operating cost runs an estimated $2,800 to $3,500 per flight hour, though this varies hugely by variant and engine type: a C++ and a D do not cost the same to run, and no single figure covers both fairly.

Engine overhaul reserve is the biggest swing factor: Arriel and PW210S overhaul events price very differently, so budget against the specific engine fitted, not a type-wide average.

For scheduled inspections and gearbox overhaul work, most owners outside Angola's offshore operators route through South African facilities. Our helicopter maintenance guide covers where that support actually sits today.
